Absurdism, as commonly defined by philosophers, refers to the constant conflict between the human tendency to search for intrinsic meaning or value in life and the human incapability to find any in such chaotic and purposeless universe. It’s a simple story about a nondescript man who does things randomly and routinely, and he eventually goes to trial for an incident caused by the heat.
Albert Camus follows this particular absurdist logic and portrays it perfectly in his novel when Meursault, the protagonist, commits a murder and sees it neither as a moral or immoral act, but as a futile act that should have no consequences.
Even when he commits the murder, he seems remarkably passive in his actions. Based on the laws, he deserved his sentence.

We al I am humbled by the many insightful, positive and beautifully written reviews of this book and feel a bit stupid for just not getting it. The main character was very unemotional and lived off of facts.

The writing was simplistic and I felt like the climax did the book justice, but it wasn’t hard-hitting like I was expecting it to be. The novel follows a first-person narrative that explores the events before and after this murder. It’s your only life. I began reading and immediately felt lost in the randomness of it all, in the detailed descriptions of settings and the truncated passages dealing with human exchanges.
However, I realized This book had a lot of potential but fell flat to me. To be a criminal means, in this context, trying to act above society’s conventions and rules, not valuing their rituals, and also: I’m sure people have picked apart the final chapter ad nauseum, but it’s another one of those pieces that will have completely different meaning for each reader depending on your beliefs at the time of reading.

But even after Googling what about this is supposed to be so great, I still didn’t stranaac find it to be very powerful. View all 8 comments. This book etranac off being weird and kind of confusing, but it started making sense when it got to part two. But still, in spite of this pull of a message I could read and relate to on some level, I could not relate to this novel.
